Quick Bites prototype:

Let’s start with, I’m not a fan of web design and UI/UX design but I recognize, as any good designer should, that this age of smart phones makes it an absolute must. Even if it’s not my focus I know my stuff. Quick Bites is a food delivery based app designed, under teacher supervision, to work through the process of learning UI/UX.

Starting with some basics in planning the app.

  • Red has a psychological response to red that results in food cravings.

Red is common in food from McDonald’s to Wendy’s and beyond but I don’t want a primary red as the basis of my design. The reason being that primary colors can be associated with lower cost and children. To avoid looking cheap I choose a burgundy for an elevated experience. In that regard, I desaturated a yellow to add high contrast between my light and dark.

An example of a font that says look at those good, good curves mmmmhhhhhh

Most clickable text contains curves to add a welcoming and lighter atmosphere. This is also echoed in the introductory text with it’s hand written feel. Kantumruy was chosen for explanatory text as it is easily read, well spaced, and simple. The text contains rounded topped m’s and h’s that match the friendly feeling of the home page text. At this point in time, as much as I want some elegance to the design of my app, elegance as formal is not what most would be expecting from an app. This friendliness will help with acquiring the target audience.

A food app won’t be successful without heavy emphasis on imagery. It stimulates hunger, it reinforces what is being selected, but it’s also an accessibility feature. Apparently, 21% of adults have low literacy rates and I’m sure many people who don’t speak English still use many apps, if people’s complains about door dashers are correct. I do have a background in restaurant work and can tell you there are plenty of people who will not read a menu.

PS: 21% is roughly over 40 million people.

Fries on a napkin with ketchup and a red background

Fries, Fries, Fries on every page every time.

I can tell you fries fix a lot of problems when I worked at a restaurant. Even the manager reassured everyone it is just burgers and fries. Someone should have informed the guests because if they didn’t get them quick enough the relationship went out the window. Plus, everyone has them, order them anywhere: fast food, sit down restaurants, multiple cultures, different price ranges, and is an easily tacked on side. Selling should begin in app. As an added bonus the color are homogenous with the apps colors.
